After the Women’s Health Initiative, the use of hormone replacement therapy declined. More comprehensive analysis of this data suggests that hormones can still be used at the menopausal transition in a safe way. After considering all risks and benefits, the impact of hormone replacement therapy on postmenopausal women is substantial. Patients and physicians need to learn more about the important contribution of estrogen to metabolic health, as the negative beliefs about menopause by both patients and physicians may contribute to poor compliance with hormone replacement therapy. This key lecture will highlight the positive aspects of estrogen replacement therapies in a good preventive care program.
