Sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes are gaining momentum. Berkeley, California passed the nation’s first SSB tax in 2014 followed by Philadelphia in 2016. Since then, six new SSB laws have passed across the U.S. Many consider SSB taxes to be a promising public health response to the obesity epidemic. This symposium will begin with the preliminary evaluation results from the SSB tax in Philly and the largest SSB tax to pass to date will be presented. The final presentation will focus on lessons learned from the SSB tax evaluation in Berkeley, focusing on topics portable to other cities implementing or hoping to implement an SSB tax.
