Course Overview

This session will discuss current controversies in challenging and relatively common situations in patients undergoing bariatric/metabolic surgery; including identifying the challenges and discussing possible and alternative solutions to specific patients-case scenarios. The topics will include a debate on controversies on:

  • Surgical revisional options for failed or complicated laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB);
  • Bariatric surgery after a remote successful or failed laparoscopic anti-reflux procedure; Bariatric surgery for patients with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and/or large esophageal hiatal hernias;
  • Treatment for leaks after laparoscopic gastric bypass (LRYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (LSG);
  • Management of abdominal wall and incisional hernias in the patient seeking for bariatric/metabolic surgery.
  • Case examples will be used to help better delineate these common scenarios and relevant recent peer-reviewed data will be presented, as well as guidance and tips to assist in treating these challenging patients.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Practicing bariatric surgeons, surgery Residents, medical students, gastroenterologists, endoscopists and all multidisciplinary professional involved with obesity and bariatric/metabolic surgery.
